Jose Altuve by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 82 Jose Carlos Altuve (born May 6, 1990) is a Venezuelan professional baseball second baseman for the Houston Astros of Major League Baseball (MLB). He made his MLB debut in 2011. In 2017 he won an American League batting title with a .346 average and was named to five All-Star teams. That same season he helped lead the Astros to their first World Series championship in franchise history over the Los Angeles Dodgers, where he was awarded ALCS MVP honors that year. Altuve stands at 5 feet 6 inches tall making him one of three players under 5’7″ inches to ever win a batting title; being joined by Wee Willie Keeler who did it twice in 1897 and 1898 as well as Freddie Patek who accomplished this feat only once back in 1978. Despite his small stature, Altuve has put together several impressive seasons offensively including two Silver Slugger awards while leading all AL hitters both times respectively during 2014 and 2016 campaigns when hitting .341 & .338 respectively along with posting career highs across multiple offensive categories such as hits (216), doubles (51), home runs (24), RBIs(96) & stolen bases(38). He also became just the sixth player since 1900 to record four consecutive 200-hit seasons from 2014-2017 following Ichiro Suzuki’s 10 straight years doing so from 2001-2010.
