John G. Koeltl

John G. Koeltl (born April 23, 1943) is an American federal judge who has served on the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York since 1994. He was appointed by President Bill Clinton and confirmed unanimously by the United States Senate in June 1994.

Early life and education

Koeltl was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1943 to John George Koeltl Sr., a lawyer, and his wife Mary Ann Rafferty-Koeltl. He graduated from Princeton University with a Bachelor of Arts degree magna cum laude in 1965 before going on to receive his Juris Doctor from Yale Law School in 1968 where he received multiple awards for academic excellence including being elected as Editor-in-Chief of The Yale Law Journal during 1967–1968 term. During law school Koelhl also clerked at Shearman & Sterling LLP’s Paris office and worked as a research assistant for Robert Bork at Yale’s Institute of Human Relations which enabled him to secure further clerkships upon graduation – firstly with Harold Leventhal at US Court of Appeals DC Circuit followed shortly after by William J Brennan Jr., Associate Justice Supreme Court 1969 – 1970 terms..

Career

After completing his clerkships, Koetll returned to private practice working within several prestigious firms between 1971 – 1991 such as Willkie Farr & Gallagher; Paul Weiss Rifkind Wharton & Garrison; Sullivan & Cromwell ; White & Case LLP et cetera prior to taking up appointment position Federal Judge U S district court southern district NY 1993 following nomination president Bill Clinton . In this role , handled cases involving international human rights violations regarding Haitians seeking asylum USA [1]as well various anti trust disputes Sony v Universal studios among others . To date retains post having been reappointed 2018[2]. Additionally held posts Adjunct professor Columbia university graduate school journalism 1981 – 1985 NYU Center Global Affairs 2000 adjunct professor civil litigation 1998 ; visiting lecturer Harvard Law School 2003 member advisory committee federal judiciary 2009 present .
