Jazz by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 67 Jazz is a genre of music that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, United States, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It emerged from roots including blues and ragtime. Jazz has since developed into multiple distinct styles with varying degrees of complexity. Its distinguishing features include blue notes, syncopation, swing rhythms, call-and-response patterns and improvisational solos which can be highly complex but often follow very simple harmonic structures or chord progressions known as “heads”. The term jazz was first used to describe this style of music around 1914 by magazine editor Spokesman Whiteman who wrote: “It’s been our pleasure to present ‘jass’ (the original name given it some time ago)…” The etymology of the word remains disputed; however many believe it derived from jasm (“pep” or energy), an obsolete slang term popularized by Stephen Foster’s song Camptown Races (1850). From its earliest days onward jazz has been played on all types instruments – most notably brass and woodwinds such as trumpets, trombones and saxophones – but also piano guitar drums double bass vocals etc..
