Islamabad by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 70 Islamabad is the capital city of Pakistan, located within the Islamabad Capital Territory. The city’s estimated population in 2020 was 1,093,000 making it the sixth largest city in Pakistan and one of its two federally administered cities. It serves as a major transport hub between northern and western parts of the country due to its strategic location at an intersection near Rawalpindi on several important roads linking Karachi to Peshawar via Taxila and M1 motorway connecting Lahore with Abbottabad. The foundations for Islamabad were laid during 1960s when President Ayub Khan appointed Greek architect Constantinos A. Doxiadis to design what would become “a garden-city” modelled after ancient Greece principles such as modernism mixed with traditional Islamic architecture designs; centred around a grand mosque which would later be named Faisal Mosque (named after late King Faisal bin Abdul Aziz) that still stands today as a symbol of national pride and religious tolerance – having been completed by Turkish builders under direction from Vedat Dalokay who took over from Doxiadis work following his death . Construction began shortly thereafter but wasn’t complete until 1985 due primarily economic constraints set upon newly formed nation state since independence 1947 partition British India into separate countries India & Pakistan .
