Iraq by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 68 Iraq, officially the Republic of Iraq, is a country in Western Asia. It has an area of 438,317 square miles and a population estimated at 38 million people as of 2019. It is bordered by Iran to the east; Kuwait to the southeast; Saudi Arabia to the south; Syria and Turkey to the north-west; Jordan and Israel on its western border; and finally it shares maritime borders with Bahrain, Qatar, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Oman. The capital city of Iraq is Baghdad, which lies along Tigris River near Mesopotamia’s ancient ruins. The history of modern-day Iraq began when Britain obtained control from Ottoman Empire after World War I through League Of Nations mandate system forming Kingdom Of Iraq under British Mandate until 1932 when independence was granted though some military presence remained till 1955 . A series of coups followed throughout 1950’s resulting in Baathist party coming into power during 1960’s culminating with Saddam Hussein taking over presidency 1979 who stayed until 2003 , following US invasion for alleged possession Weapons Of Mass Destruction that were never found . Subsequently Coalition Provisional Authority dissolved government bodies including army , drafted new constitution approved 2005 elections ushering in period democracy & establishing Federal Government replacing centralised one that existed before however this period also saw rise various militant groups such Shia militia leading up civil war 2006 – 2008 where sectarian violence reached peak while Sunni militants mainly al Qaeda In Iraq took control large parts country leaving behind legacy fear still present today . Economy wise oil remains major commodity accounting approximately 95% export revenues thus Iraqi economy heavily depends upon world market price fluctuations making it vulnerable sudden changes global markets meanwhile despite being home second largest proven reserves world nation struggle provide basic services due significant mismanagement funds accumulated during decades rule Saddam Hussein whose policies led economic stagnation coupled corruption widespread unemployment poor infrastructure inability attract foreign investment hindering attempts diversify sources income outside energy sector yet slowly but surely progress made recent years both industrial manufacturing & financial sectors seeing increased investments especially within construction industry since security situation improved allowing projects like airports roads bridges etc get underway even so much work needs done order bring living standards those enjoyed other countries region back late 1990’s levels or earlier prior sanctions era Overall political landscape remain volatile mixture different armed factions each vying establish their own form ruling structure without clear cut leader likely result ongoing conflict future although hope exist peace may be achieved opening dialogue between opposing sides combined efforts international community support stabilise troubled region once again allow citizens enjoy life free worry relatively speaking course
