Iowa by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 85 Iowa is a state in the Midwestern United States. It is bordered by Minnesota to the north, Wisconsin and Illinois to the east, Missouri to the south, and South Dakota and Nebraska to the west. The capital of Iowa is Des Moines. In terms of land area it ranks 26th among U.S states at 56276 square miles (145753 km2). As of 2019, its population was estimated at 3155111 people ranking 31st in population for US states and territories making Iowa one of America’s more populous but least densely populated regions (population density 58people per sq mi/22people per km2). The name “Iowa” originates from an Algonquian word meaning “the beautiful land”. First explored by French explorers Jacques Marquette & Louis Jolliet in 1673, who named it La Rivière des Sioux (“River of Suoix”), Iowa became part of New France until 1763 when it was ceded as part of Spain’s Louisiana Purchase all becoming US territory after 1803 with formal admission into union on December 281846 as 29th state alongside Wisconsin which had joined earlier that same day forming so called “Ioway-Wisconsin Pair” or Twin Territories; thus being first pair ever admitted together into Union paving way for future similar cases like Nevada & California joining simultaneously almost half century later 1898 .
