The Iowa State Cyclones men’s basketball team is the intercollegiate men’s basketball program of Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. The school competes in the Big 12 Conference of NCAA Division I and plays its home games at Hilton Coliseum on campus. Under head coach Steve Prohm, who was hired following Fred Hoiberg leaving for the Chicago Bulls after five successful seasons with ISU, they have achieved success since their first season back in 1908-09 when they joined the Missouri Valley Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MVIAA).

Their most recent national championship title came during their run to a Sweet Sixteen appearance during the 2013–14 season under former head coach Fred Hoiberg. In addition to this accomplishment, the Cyclones have made 14 other appearances in either an NCAA or NIT tournament over time including three consecutive trips from 2000-02 and six total conference championships – four regular season titles (1910–11; 1912–13; 1933–34; 1935–36) & two tournaments (1945 & 2001). Additionally, Iowa State has produced several All Americans throughout its history such as Victor Alexander (’88), Jeff Grayer(’89), Jamaal Tinsley(’01), Marcus Fizer(’00)and Melvin Ejim (’14).

Notable former coaches include Johnny Orr who led them from 1980 until his retirement at age 72 following a third round loss to Syracuse University in 1994 where he had coached for twelve years prior. He took over shortly before legendary player Barry Stevens left town and replaced him by signing future NBA star Ron Harris out of high school just one year later becoming one of only two players ever signed straight outta highschool by Coach Orr -the other being 6’9″ Micheal Nurse also known as “The Human Battering Ram”. Alongside these notable achievements Coach Orr set 4 additional records while coaching: Most career wins(218); Most 20 win Seasons(12); Winningest Season Ever with 25 victories&Most Consecutive winning seasons with 17! It’s no surprise that today he holds great respect among both Cyclone fans and alumni alike having been inducted into both The Basketball Hall Of Fame And College Basketball Hall Of Fame Inductee Class respectively…as well as earning himself named ‘one greatest college coaches all time’.

Today Steve Prohm leads current roster which includes National Freshman Player 2017 Lindell Wigginton along side potential stars like Cameron Lard , Zoran Talley Jr., Jakolby Long . Many are looking forward see what heights can reach come March Madness 2018/2019 this up coming fall !
