Ilhan Omar

Ilhan Omar (born October 4, 1982) is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district since 2019, and previously representing District 60B in the Minnesota House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019. The district includes part of Minneapolis and all of Brooklyn Center, Crystal, Golden Valley, New Hope and Robbinsdale in northwestern Hennepin County. She was a member of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL).

Omar is one of two Muslim women—along with Rashida Tlaib—serving in Congress; both are members of the Democratic Party. In 2016 she became first Somali-American legislator elected to office when she won a seat on the Minnesota House or Representatives that year; this made her also likely one if not thee only Somali immigrants ever elected to state legislature nationwide at any level across America during its history.. Her election garnered national attention due largely to her being a refugee who had fled Somalia’s civil war as child before settling with family in Minneapolis by age 12 where they would become citizens soon after arriving here decades ago .
