The franchise was established in 1967 as the San Diego Rockets, an expansion team originally based in San Diego. In 1971, the Rockets relocated to Houston. In their history, they have won two NBA Championships (1994 and 1995), four Western Conference titles (1981-1986) and seven division titles (1977–78 through 1981–82; 1993–94 through 1996–97). They play home games at Toyota Center which opened on October 6th 2003 after spending 25 years at The Summit from 1975-2001 and Compaq Center from 1997-2003. The current roster consists of 2018 All Star James Harden as well as Russell Westbrook whom they acquired during the 2019 offseason via trade with Oklahoma City Thunder for Chris Paul & draft picks along with 2017 MVP runner up Eric Gordon among other standout players such Pj Tucker who has become one of the best 3&D wings currently playing around league due to his hustle plays on both ends of floor. Under Head Coach Mike D’Antoni’s system ,the rockets have been known for its “Moreyball” approach where it emphasizes three pointers and layups while avoiding mid range jump shots . From 2016 to 2020 under this offense format ,Houston had led all teams by averaging 40 or more points per game each season . But even though is not part of modern stats overall record shows that since 2003 – 04 season when Jeff Van Gundy took charge lead them back into playoffs until today 2021 ,Rockets reached post season consecutively 17 times making them tied second longest streak all time only behind San Antonio Spurs 19 years run between 1998 – 2017 .
