Hong Kong by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 75 Hong Kong is a special administrative region of the People’s Republic of China. It is located in East Asia and bordered by mainland China to the north, south, east and west. The territory covers an area of 1,104 square kilometres (426 sq mi) and has a population of over 7 million people as of 2020. Hong Kong consists mainly of the island district with its surrounding islands including Lantau Island, Lamma Island and Cheung Chau; two urban areas: Kowloon Peninsula on one side across Victoria Harbour from Central Hong Kong Island; New Territories which includes outlying rural areas on both sides along Mainland Chinese border stretching up to Deep Bay near Shenzhen city in Guangdong province; plus more than 200 small offshore islands around them. The history dates back to 1841 when British forces captured it during First Opium War then ceded it to Britain under Treaty Of Nanking signed at end same war . After 99 years later , In 1997 sovereignty was transferred to China following handover ceremony between UK Prime Minister John Major & Chinese Premier Mr Teng Xiaoping ending 156 years British colonial rule . Though having different political system & legal system compared with rest parts Mainland China , HK still retains high degree autonomy status through “One Country Two System” policy granting freedom for citizens living there .
