History
William Dutton Hayward founded Haywards during 1852 after purchasing land from Rancho San Lorenzo which included both sides of what later became Mission Boulevard for his cattle ranch. He built a hotel on A Street (now Castro Valley Blvd.) across from where he planted many oak trees so travelers would be able to easily recognize it when they arrived by stagecoach or train station at nearby Shinn’s Station (currently known as Hayward Regional Shoreline). By 1870 there were several small stores springing up near each other around town which eventually formed into today’s downtown district. In 1880 an election was held to incorporate Hayward but failed due to opposition within local businesses who felt taxation would harm their business interests; however another attempt succeeded two years later leading to its official incorporation on March 14th 1886.
