Hannover, or Hanover in English, is the capital and largest city of Lower Saxony (Niedersachsen) in Germany. It is located on both sides of the River Leine and has a population of around 518,000 people making it the 13th most populous city in Germany.

History

The area surrounding Hannover was first settled by Germanic tribes as early as 5000 BC who were later replaced by Celts during Roman times. The region then became part of Charlemagne’s Frankish Empire until 919 AD when Henry I founded his own dynasty which would become known as Guelphs (Guelfen). In 1241 Hannover officially became a town with its own charter granted to it by Duke Otto IV from Brunswick-Lüneburg; this marked the start of centuries worth of expansion for Hannover. During this time many important structures such as governmental buildings, churches and schools were built along with an economic infrastructure that relied heavily on trade goods like woolen cloth being transported through local waterways into nearby towns and cities – eventually developing hannoveer into one fo the main hubs for commerce within Northern Europe at that time.
During World War II much damage was inflicted upon hannovers infrastructure but after extensive rebuilding efforts throughout 1950’s & 1960’s some major landmarks have been restored including Marktkirche (Market Church), Stadtbibliothek(City Library) & Schloss Herrenhausen(Herrenhausen Castle).
