Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 42 The Gonzaga Bulldogs men’s basketball team is the intercollegiate men’s basketball program representing Gonzaga University. The school competes in the West Coast Conference (WCC) of NCAA Division I and play home games at Charles Koch Arena on campus. Since joining the WCC in 1979, they have been among its most successful teams; winning 18 regular season championships, two tournament titles, and appearing consistently within both major polls since 2001-02 season—the longest active streak of any mid-major program. Gonzaga has had 15 appearances in the NCAA Tournament with 11 Sweet Sixteen berths since 1999–2000 making them a perennial power house college basketball team. In 2016–17 they became only one of seven schools to reach four consecutive Sweet Sixteens along with Duke Blue Devils, Florida Gators, Michigan State Spartans ,Ohio State Buckeyes , Kansas Jayhawks and Villanova Wildcats . They also advanced to their first Final Four that same year where they faced off against eventual champions North Carolina Tar Heels losing 71–65 ending an impressive run for Head Coach Mark Few’s squad who ultimately finished 37–2 overall record that season which set new records for wins set by a West Coast Team as well as fewest losses ever recorded by a Bulldog team in single season history . After returning from hiatus due Covid -19 pandemic during 2020-21 Season , Bulldogs went undefeated capturing both Regular Season title as well regular conference tournament Title under leadership of head coach Mark Few once again culminating into another Elite 8 Appearance before bowing out South Carolina Gamecocks 81–68 thus concluding yet another storied era for Men’s Basketball Program at Gonzaga University The current head coach is Mark Few (1999), who was brought onto staff by former head coach Dan Monson after his hiring away from Oregon Ducks’ coaching job/Assistant Coaching position 1998-99 NBA Draft saw three players drafted: Casey Calvary (1st round pick – Phoenix Suns ), Richie Frahm( New York Knicks ) & Matt Santangelo 1st Round Pick San Antonio Spurs). As such it made them just fourth school to produce footer First Rounders during same draft all while setting more milestones over next decade plus producing 16 total draftees including Domantas Sabonis(11th Overall Indiana Pacers)and Kyle Wiltjer (45th Overall Houston Rockets ).
