George Floyd by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 69 George Floyd (1973 – 2020) was an African American man who became a symbol of police brutality when he died in Minneapolis, Minnesota on May 25th, 2020 while being restrained by the knee of Derek Chauvin, a white officer. The incident sparked nationwide protests against racism and police violence and catalyzed the Black Lives Matter movement. Early Life Floyd was born to Roxie Washington and George Perry Floyd Jr., two sharecroppers from Houston Texas. He attended Yates High School where he played football before joining his mother’s church choir at age 13 as she worked to keep him away from trouble in their rough neighbourhood. At 18 years old Floyd moved out of his family home after becoming involved with criminal activity that would lead to several jail sentences over the next decade or so including armed robbery for which he served five years behind bars in 2003-2008 period . After getting released from prison, Floyd relocated to Minneapolis where lived until his death. Death On May 25th 2020 at 8:08 pm local time , George Floyd died during an arrest made by officers responding to reports about a counterfeit bill used at Cup Foods grocery store near downtown Minneapolis . Officer Derek Chauvin applied pressure with his knee on Mr Floyds neck for more than eight minutes despite cries calling “I cant breathe” heard multiple times during this period . Several other officers held down both arms and legs preventing any kind of physical reaction even though many civilian witnesses begged them repeatedly not intervene due do excessive use force seen by all present bystanders.. Bystanders filmed parts of it creating immediate public outrage as soon as news spread through social media platforms such Facebook Live streams etc .. An autopsy later concluded that cause death were combined effects suffocation due compressions together cardiovascular disease factors such hypertension high blood sugar levels found victim body tests afterwards.. As result these events resulted widespread demonstrations across United States demanding justice behalf slain black men women countrywide well abroad too countries like France Germany Brazil India among others … Legacy In wake tragic event hundreds thousands protesters gathered streets around world demand racial equality reform Police Departments better accountability law enforcement agents end systematic oppression minorities US society… A memorial erected spot crime committed now serves reminder everyone what happened there add extra emphasis protestors rallying cry Justice George Lloyd! His name been immortalized people worldwide coming together support same cause making sure future generations never forget story legacy left behind….
