Genocide

Genocide

Genocide is defined as the deliberate and systematic destruction of a national, racial, political or cultural group. This term was first coined by Raphael Lemkin in 1944 to describe Nazi policies during World War II that led to the deaths of millions of Jews, Roma people and other targeted groups. The United Nations Convention on Genocide defines it as any act committed with intent to destroy a national, ethnical, racial or religious group in whole or part.

The most infamous example of genocide occurred during World War II when Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime implemented its “Final Solution” policy which aimed at exterminating all Jewish people from Europe through mass killings mostly done in extermination camps throughout Eastern Europe such as Auschwitz-Birkenau death camp. Other examples include the Armenian Genocide (1915–23) whereby approximately 1 million Armenians were killed by Ottoman Turks; Rwanda’s 1994 genocide where more than 800 000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were massacred within three months; Bosnia-Herzegovina’s 1992-95 ethnic cleansing campaign wherein an estimated 200 000 Bosnians died either directly due to fighting or indirectly because their homes had been destroyed; Cambodia’s 1975–79 killing fields under Pol Pot’s rule resulting in over 2 million casualties (mainly intellectuals); Darfur region’s 2003 conflict leaving up 300000 dead due to tribal violence between nomadic Arab Janjaweed militia backed by Sudan government against non-Arab African farmers who have been accused of supporting rebel movements seeking autonomy for Darfur Province etcetera .

To prevent further occurrences like these several international laws have put forth including 1948 Universal Declaration Human Rights , 1949 Geneva Conventions & Additional Protocols 1977 Additional Protocol I &II 1951 Refugee Convention 1998 Rome Statute 2004 International Criminal Court 2005 Responsibility To Protect Resolution 2009 UN Declaration On Indigenous People Right To Self Determination 2012 Global Centre For R2P 2013 Arms Trade Treaty 2014 ICCPR Optional protocol 2016 Paris Agreement 2017 Prevention And Punishment Of Crimes Against Humanity Act 2018 Vienna Principles And many others . All these conventions are meant for raising awareness about this heinous crime so that no one else has ever face consequences like those faced before WWII Holocaust victims and modern day genocides around world today will come into halt soon enough
