Gender by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 95 Gender is a social concept used to identify and differentiate between men, women, non-binary people, and other genders within society. Gender identities are often expressed through behavior such as dressing in certain ways or engaging in particular activities. It can also be seen in language choices such as pronouns (he/she/they) and gendered terms like “fireman” or “stewardess.” The idea of gender has been present since ancient times; the Old Testament includes passages that refer to male and female roles—the man is expected to work outside of the home while the woman takes on domestic duties. In modern societies today however, gender norms have become less rigidly defined with more respect given for individuals who do not conform to them. There are many different forms of gender identity including cisgender (where someone identifies with their birth sex), transgender (someone whose self-identification does not match his/her biological sex), agender (lacking any feeling towards either end of the spectrum), bigender (having two distinct genders at once) among others. These various identifications may lead people to express themselves differently than what would traditionally be associated with their birth sex leading further away from traditional binary definitions around gender expression. At its core, how one views their own gender identity should come down entirely up to personal preference without fear of judgement from those around them – allowing each individual person freedom when expressing themselves based upon societal expectations surrounding qualities attributed by our respective sexes which differ depending on culture and context both historically & presently .
