Gavin Newsom by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 75 Gavin Christopher Newsom (born October 10, 1967) is an American politician and businessman serving as the 40th governor of California since 2019. A member of the Democratic Party, he previously served as Mayor of San Francisco from 2004 to 2011 and Lieutenant Governor of California from 2011 to 2019. He was sworn in as Governor on January 7, 2019 after winning the 2018 gubernatorial election by a wide margin. Newsom attended Redwood High School before attending Santa Clara University for his undergraduate degree in political science and economics where he graduated magna cum laude with honors distinction in 1989. After college, Newsom worked at PlumpJack Winery which his family had purchased shortly before he joined them there; eventually becoming CEO through expansion into restaurants and other businesses including resorts. In 2003, Newsom ran for Mayor of San Francisco against then-incumbent mayor Willie Brown but lost narrowly due to voter confusion over two candidates with similar names: Gavin Newsome vs Matt Gonzalez; who received more votes than expected because they both happened to have “News” somewhere within their name. In 2004 however, following a special election prompted by Brown’s resignation mid term – Gavin won that race thus making him the youngest mayor ever elected in city history – aged 36 at the time! During his tenure as mayor between 2004–2011 some notable events took place such as when Proposition 8 passed banning same sex marriage recognizing it constitutional rights across all US states despite protests held throughout California opposing its approval — even though this occurred during an era when majority opinion agreed upon such law being implemented nationwide regardless… Nonetheless under Gavin’s leadership SF became one if not THE first major city/statewide municipality take measures itself protecting LGBT+ rights back 2006 via executive order signed off himself granting benefits equivalent any given heterosexual couple legally married could enjoy too whether or not federal government acknowledged those unions were valid per se..
