France government by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 45 France is a unitary semi-presidential republic with strong democratic traditions. Its government operates under the framework established by the French Constitution of 1958, and comprises three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial. The executive branch consists primarily of the President of France who serves as both head of state and head of government; it also includes their cabinet (the Government), which is composed mostly from members either from Parliament or directly appointed by the president. The legislature in France is bicameral, consisting of two chambers: National Assembly (Assemblée nationale) for legislation related to finance, economy etc., and Senate (Sénat) for more general matters such as foreign policy. Both are elected every five years through direct elections using proportional representation systems according to article 3–5(1). Members serve a renewable term lasting up to nine years depending on institution’s decisions; this allows them to maintain continuity while still giving citizens an opportunity to elect new representatives at regular intervals via universal suffrage set forth in Article 2(3)(4)(6&7). The judiciary in France consists mainly out court system divided into two levels—civil/criminal courts that handle trials involving felonies/misdemeanors respectively—and several specialized tribunals tasked with specific areas like labor disputes or tax frauds cases. Judicial power lies in Supreme Court’s hands where they make all final rulings regarding constitutionality issues including laws passed by parliament itself if deemed necessary per articles 4 & 5bis-9aivi2 ivii2bviibviii .
