Felix van Groeningen

Felix van Groeningen (born 9 October 1977) is a Belgian film director, screenwriter and producer. He has won numerous awards for his work in both feature films and documentaries.

Van Groeningen was born in Ghent, Belgium. His father was an advocate of the Dutch language who taught it to him while growing up; Van Groeningen began writing poetry as a young man before turning to filmmaking as a career choice. After studying at the Netherlands Film Academy in Amsterdam he returned to Belgium where he made several short films that were screened at international festivals such as Cannes and Toronto International Film Festival. In 2004 he released what would become one of his most critically acclaimed works The Misfortunates which earned him Best Director awards from multiple organisations including the European Film Academy Awards and Rotterdam International Film Festival’s Tiger Award for best film among others.
In 2012 Van Goering directed The Broken Circle Breakdown which went on to win over 25 national & international awards -including 5 Magritte Awards-, becoming one of the most internationally successful Flemish films ever produced with its release across Europe, North America & Australia/New Zealand receiving critical acclaim along with commercial success – grossing nearly $13 million USD worldwide– . It also received an Oscar nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 86th Academy Awards making it only second Flemish movie nominated by Hollywood after Daughters Of Darkness (1971).The same year Felix’s documentary ‘Allez Eddy! about cycling champion Eddie Merckx became another success story when it premiered at Tribeca FF winning audience award there followed by other accolades like`Best Documentary Feature’at Brussels IFF 2014 & `Public Prize”at Angers IFF 2013 amongst many others..Van Goering then wrote&directed Belgica ,which opened 2016 Berlinale competition section earning him Silver Bear Jury Grand Prix award besides other prizes around world alongside multiple nominations-like Golden Frog recognition @ Camerimage festival or Magrittes nods again-.In 2018 Felix co-wrote Beautiful Boy starring Timothée Chalamet based off David Sheff memoirs gaining praise allover leading into 2019 when drama ‘The Kingmaker’,documentary about politics power plays surrounding Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte had world premiere opening IDFA officially launching new phase on filmmaker’s carreer .
