Elvis Presley by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 68 Elvis Presley (January 8, 1935 – August 16, 1977) was an American singer and actor. Regarded as one of the most significant cultural icons of the 20th century, he is often referred to as “the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” or simply “the King”. Presley began his career in 1954 recording at Sun Records; blending country music with rhythm and blues influences. His new sound gained popularity among African Americans while crossing over into the mainstream pop charts. In 1955 Presley signed a long-term contract with RCA Victor which saw him release his first hit record “Heartbreak Hotel” that same year selling more than a million copies worldwide. This success made him internationally famous and sparked unprecedented demand for tickets for his live performances resulting in sold out shows across the US throughout 1956–1957 known as The Elvis Phenomenon. In addition to being musically acclaimed, Presley’s films also helped popularize rock ‘n’ roll culture during this period; becoming some of Hollywood’s biggest box office successes including Jailhouse Rock (1957), G I Blues (1960), Flaming Star (1960) and Blue Hawaii(1961). Throughout his acting career he starred in 33 movies making him one of Hollywood’s biggest stars by 1965 earning himself three Golden Globe Awards nominations amongst many other accolades . During this time Elvis became heavily involved in charitable activities such as donating millions to charities like The March Of Dimes Foundation and even received awards from countries around the world for all kinds of humanitarian efforts . By 1969 however, after years spent touring extensively throughout America it took its toll on his health leading up to what would become known as The Vegas Years where he performed primarily inside Las Vegas showrooms instead . Although not reaching previously achieved levels commercially these shows still drew large crowds until 1976 when ill health forced their end much too soon before passing away due to heart failure only months later on August 16th 1977 aged 42 leaving behind an incredible legacy within both music & film industries alike ..
