El Paso by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 62 El Paso is a city in the U.S. state of Texas and an international port on the Rio Grande river at its southernmost tip, just across from Ciudad Juarez in Mexico. It is part of El Paso County within the greater metropolitan area known as The Borderplex, which stretches along both sides of the border between Texas and New Mexico, with a population nearing 2 million people. Founded by Spanish settlers in 1659, El Paso was first called “El Paso del Norte” or “The Pass to North”. In 1873 it became county seat for El Paso County but did not incorporate until 1873 when it officially became a town under Texas law with over 3000 inhabitants. By 1890 it had grown to become one of the largest cities west of St Louis with 25000 residents and numerous businesses including two railroads — Southern Pacific RailRoad (SPRR) that ran east–west through El paso proper;and Mexican National Railway (MNR), now Ferrocarril Mexicano de Carga y Pasajeros(FCMP)that runs south into Chihuahua City via Juarez—connecting passengers to central/southwestern mainland Mexico as well as other points throughout north America & beyond.. One major attraction in El Paso is Fort Bliss military base located near downtown where more than 3500 soldiers are stationed year round making this one large employer plus all related services such as restaurantes, retail shops etc . Also popular tourist attractions include several museums detailing local history & culture like The Plaza Theatre,,the Union Depot train station ,the Camino Real hotel -all classic examples typical architecture from turn-of-century elpasoans who sought prosperity during that era’s “golden age” ;other sites offering great views are Franklin mountains State Park& Wyler aerial tramway –both located atop Mt Cristo Rey high above ground level giving visitors spectacular vistas–as far away even stretching out toward Big Bend national park some 200 miles downriver!
