Edwin Diaz by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 45 Edwin Diaz (born April 19, 1995) is an American Major League Baseball relief pitcher for the New York Mets. He previously played with the Seattle Mariners from 2016 to 2018. Early life and amateur career Diaz was born in Puerto Rico on April 19, 1995 and attended Caguas Military Academy in his hometown of Bayamon before being drafted by the Seattle Mariners in 2012. As a high schooler, he spent two years playing collegiate baseball at Carlos Beltran Baseball Academy. In 2014 and 2015, while pitching for Pulaski High School’s team in Tennessee (USA), he posted an ERA under 1 across 35 innings pitched both seasons combined; these performances earned him a nomination as one of Prospect Digest’s top 10 rookies heading into the 2016 season. Professional career Seattle Mariners (2016–2018) After signing with Seattle as their third round pick that year out of high school Diaz made his major league debut on June 5th, 2016 against Oakland Athletics throwing 2 scoreless innings after coming up through minor leagues very quickly due to his success rate there(which included posting 31 strikeouts over 18 IP). On July 22nd 2017 Edwin recorded 16 saves which became a franchise record until it was broken next season when Diaz set new records for most games finished ,most holds ,and highest K/9 ratio . During this breakout campaign he also notched 57 total saves making it second-best single-season mark among all relievers since 2000.(only Craig Kimbrel had more than 60 during same period). His accomplishments were rewarded with All Star selection that year but unfortunately Arm injury limited him down stretch forcing him miss last month regular season play resulting missing playoffs berth what could have been first time since 2001 they would make post seaosn run . New York Mets (2019–present) After another successful start to 2018 campaign where Edwin led MLB relievers HR/FB% & WHIP stats yet again speculation began about possible trade involving big name players like Noah Syndergaard or Zack Wheeler plus few others eventually leading them acquiring former Mariner closer who will take part bullpen setup alongside Jeurys Familia Robert Gsellman Seth Lugo Tyler Bashlor Justin Wilson etc.. By far biggest move prior 2019 spring training camp has already proven itself beneficial as now only couple weeks away from opening day group seems ready challenge recent heavyweights Nationals & Phillies atop NL East standings . Conclusion With just 4 full years experience behind back so far 25 old Dominican native looks poised become known face around majors especially if Mets can stay competitive throughout upcoming 162 game journey then possibility exists we may see young flamethrower reach even greater heights considering how much potential lies within arm strength alone its becoming increasingly clear why front office chose bring aboard such talented individual looking forward bringing fire works back Flushing Meadows N Y area soon enough !
