Drones, also known as Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) or Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS), are unmanned aircraft systems controlled remotely by an operator. They can be used for a variety of purposes including surveillance and reconnaissance, aerial photography, search-and-rescue missions, transportation of goods, border patrol activities and more. The use of drones has grown significantly in recent years due to their affordability and versatility.

The first drone was developed during World War I when the British Army released an early version called “Aerial Target” which was essentially a radio operated model airplane. In subsequent decades there were further developments in UAV technology resulting from military research projects such as those conducted by DARPA in the United States and other countries around the world. Since then drones have become increasingly popular with both commercial companies and hobbyists alike due to advances in electronics technology that have made them much easier to control than ever before; this includes autopilot functions allowing users to set waypoints for navigation without needing direct input from the pilot every step along the way.

Modern day drones come equipped with sensors such as cameras providing live footage back to operators on land or sea; they can also carry payloads like gas detectors or infrared imaging equipment depending on mission requirements – making them extremely versatile tools for various fields including agriculture where farmers may need detailed images taken over large areas quickly without having personnel physically present throughout entire crop cycles; law enforcement agencies using them for surveillance operations at crime scenes etc.; fire fighting organizations utilizing thermal imaging capabilities when searching buildings engulfed by flames etc.. All these applications take advantage of drone’s ability fly autonomously while being monitored remotely – something traditional manned aircraft cannot do safely nor cost effectively enough compared to RPAS solutions available today.

Additionally civilian usage is becoming very common place now days too especially among recreational enthusiasts who enjoy building customised models either just for fun or even participating competitive events held across many parts of globe each year showcasing best remote pilots skillset & latest technological advancements made within industry itself – some high end competition quadcopters costing up into few thousands US dollars! Despite all these positives however it should always be kept mind: Drones are still considered aircraft under international aviation regulations so safety guidelines must followed avoid any potential accidents/incidents occurring mid-flight caused negligence lack proper knowledge understanding rules governing flying particular airspace prior taking off air .
