Dnipropetrovsk

Dnipropetrovsk (Ukrainian: Дніпропетро́вськ, romanized: Dnipropetrovs’k), or simply known as Dnepr is a major city located in Eastern Ukraine. It is the administrative center of the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast and has an estimated population of 1 million people. The city was founded by Catherine II in 1776 and named after her husband Grigory Potemkin who was from Tambov Governorate, Russia.

The city’s strategic location on the banks of two rivers — the River Orel and Samara Rivers made it one of the most important industrial centers during Soviet times with over 150 factories producing machinery, metal products, chemicals, textiles etc operating here. During World War II more than 800 thousand citizens died due to bombings by German forces but later rebuilt after its liberation in 1943 . After Ukrainian independence in 1991 many industries shifted focus towards metallurgy which eventually became one of main economic drivers for this region today.
