Des Moines is the capital of the U.S. state of Iowa, as well as being its most populous city with a population estimated at 211,821 in 2019. It lies on both banks of the Des Moines River and has an area of 87 square miles (225 km2). The city was founded in 1843 by French colonists and named after the river which they believed to be “of many fishes”. It quickly became an important trading center for settlers heading westward due to its location near several major transportation routes including several railroads that connected it to other cities throughout Iowa and even some into neighboring states.

The economy of Des Moines revolves around finance, insurance, manufacturing/distribution services & logistics, publishing/media outlets such as Meredith Corporation and Gannett Company Inc., governmental agencies including two United States Department offices located downtown – Agriculture & Natural Resources Departments; banking institutions like Wells Fargo Home Mortgage headquarters; biotechnology companies such as DuPont Pioneer since 2000 have been established here along with hundreds more across three counties surrounding it making up “Greater Des Moines” metro-area with over 600K inhabitants combined – this has helped attract businesses from all over world primarily targeting US market creating thousands jobs while diversifying local industry base significantly during past decades alongside tourism activities becoming increasingly popular among visitors who come here take part numerous events held annually e.g.: World Food Festival or State Fair attracting millions people every year making one biggest yearly attractions Midwest region if not entire country itself!
