Des Moines is the capital of the U.S. state of Iowa, as well as being its most populous city with a population estimated at 211,821 in 2019. It lies on both banks of the Des Moines River and has an area of 87 square miles (225 km2). The city was founded in 1843 by French colonists and named after the river which they believed to be “of many fishes”.
