Derek Chauvin by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 88 Derek Michael Chauvin (born March 19, 1976) is a former police officer with the Minneapolis Police Department in Minnesota. He gained notoriety following his involvement in the death of George Floyd on May 25, 2020 while he was on duty as an arresting officer. Early life and career Chauvin was born to a family of French-Canadian descent and graduated from Andover High School in 1994. After graduation he joined the United States Army Reserve, achieving the rank of E4 before leaving service in 1997 without completing his term of enlistment. In 2001 he began working for the Minneapolis Police Department where he worked until 2021 when it became clear that criminal charges would be brought against him due to his role in George Floyd’s death. During this time period there were several complaints filed by citizens over use-of-force incidents involving Derek which were either dismissed or not acted upon by authorities at various levels within MPD’s internal affairs process; none resulted in disciplinary action being taken prior to 2020.
