Death of George Floyd by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 59 George Floyd (October 14, 1973 – May 25, 2020) was an African-American man who died in Minneapolis, Minnesota after being arrested by four police officers for allegedly using a counterfeit $20 bill. His death resulted in worldwide protests against police brutality and institutional racism. Incident and Arrest On the evening of May 25th 2020, George Floyd was apprehended outside Cup Foods grocery store on Chicago Avenue South by two members of the Minneapolis Police Department: Derek Chauvin and Tou Thao. The arrest came after employees at the store called 911 to report that a customer had paid with a suspected fake $20 bill. During his arrest, witnesses reported seeing officer Chauvin kneeling on George’s neck while he lay handcuffed face down on the street; despite repeatedly saying “I can’t breathe”, he remained pinned under Officer Chavin’s knee for nearly nine minutes before becoming unresponsive. Aftermath Paramedics were called to attend to Mr Floyd but were unable autopsy determined that asphyxiation due to sustained pressure from law enforcement personnel during restraint had caused his death; no other physical trauma or medical conditions played any role in contributing towards it . On June 1st , Hennepin County Medical Examiner announced their decision not list homicide as cause of death rather than listing “cardiopulmonary arrest complicating law enforcement subdual [sic], restrain[t] & neck compression”.
