Crime, also known as an offence or a criminal act, is any behaviour that violates the law of a state, country or other jurisdiction. Crimes can range from minor misdemeanors such as jaywalking to serious felonies such as murder. Crime is often viewed in terms of its severity and consequences but it may be divided into categories based on their intent (maliciousness) and context (type). Commonly recognised types of crime include violent crimes; property crimes; public-order offenses; white-collar crimes; organized crime; cybercrime and hate crime.

The causes for committing a crime are varied and complex with no single factor contributing to all illegal activities. Poverty has been identified by some researchers as one underlying cause that leads individuals to engage in criminal behavior while others point to education level, family structure, mental health issues and drugs/alcohol abuse among other factors being linked with criminality.

Despite efforts by government entities around the world over many years towards reducing levels of criminal activity through deterrence techniques including increased policing presence/activity even harsher punishments – there remains much work still needed if we are ever going achieve significant reductions across communities globally when it comes down tackling this age-old problem which continues plague our societies today..
