Creighton Bluejays men’s basketball by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 50 The Creighton Bluejays men’s basketball team is the intercollegiate men’s basketball program of Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. The program is a member of the Big East Conference and plays its home games at CHI Health Center Omaha. Creighton began playing basketball in 1905 under head coach Arthur Schabinger and has developed into one of the most successful programs in college basketball history. The Bluejays have won 25 conference championships, including 11 Missouri Valley Conference titles, 12 MVC tournament titles, and two Great Midwest Conference regular season championships. They also made 15 NCAA Tournament appearances between 1977–2020 with three trips to the Sweet Sixteen (including an Elite Eight appearance) during that time span. During their tenure as members of the Big East since 2014-15 they’ve had four 20 win seasons; advanced to both NIT Final Fours (2019 & 2020), appeared in 5 NCAA Tournaments (2015 – 2019). Under current head coach Greg McDermott, who took over after Dana Altman left for Oregon following his 2010–11 campaign with Creighton —the school’s all-time winningest coach—the program has enjoyed unprecedented success throughout his tenureship . In 2011–12 he led them to a 27–7 record which included wins against ranked opponents Wisconsin (#14), Long Beach State (#23) , California (#13), San Diego State #18). He followed up by guiding them back to postseason play five times out six years including 3 consecutive NCAA tournaments from 2013-2016 making it furthest run ever when they reached 2016 West Regional Semifinals before losing 67–63 vs Oklahoma Sooners ending their historic season 26–9 overall 13–5 conference finish was best since joining new league notching signature road victories @ Xavier 2x Villanova UConn Marquette etc… In 2018 McDermott guided Jays back into spotlight despite many preseason doubters leading squad on another Cinderella story as they earned double bye then defeated Kansas St Wildcats 83 — 80 advancing past first round for third straight year but eventually fell short 72 — 68 v RIBCO Rams ending another memorable campaign 24 – 10 overall 9 — 9 conf record . His greatest accomplishment came just last year taking underdog bunch w/o having any senior players or scholarship big man all way thru grueling grind finishing 22nd nationally polls climbing maximum Top25 rankings multiple occasions reaching semi finals NIT tourney ultimately being eliminated by Wichita St Shockers 75 – 63 capping off tremendous 24 – 8 mark 14 – 4 B’East standing .. As such now firmly entrenched among elite teams national level Mcdermott continues build upon successes forging brighter future ahead .
