The Connecticut Huskies, also known as UConn Huskies, are the intercollegiate athletic teams of the University of Connecticut (UConn). The school is a member of NCAA Division I and the American Athletic Conference. The university fields teams in 18 varsity sports for both men’s and women’s programs—baseball, basketball, cross country running, field hockey, football (in FBS), golf, ice hockey , lacrosse , rowing , soccer , softball tennis track & field (indoor and outdoor) volleyball swimming & diving .

History
The official colors for all UConn athletic teams are blue and white. Since its inception in 1889 the school has had over 48 different nicknames with “Huskies” being adopted officially by 1947. This name was chosen due to it having a unique connection to New England which includes dog sledding races that have taken place since 1925 called “the International Federation Sled Dog Races”. Additionally huskies were often used during this period as working dogs on farms throughout Connecticut so they had strong local ties to the state itself. Furthermore other names such as Aggies or Pioneers were considered but ultimately rejected due to their lack of relevance specifically relating back to Uconn or even just Connecticut overall making them less popular choices than those already established like Bulldogs; Wildcats; Bears etc… In addition an early newspaper article from 1906 stated: “No one could think up anything better than ‘husky’ when referring collectively our various sport activities.” Ultimately this decision was made permanent at some point prior 1947 whereupon we now proudly refer ourselves today with same moniker!

Athletics Programs Currently there are 18 varsity athletics programs offered at Uconn – 8 male-only sports ; 10 female only sports ; 1 coed sport – Rowing . All these teams play within either division I or II leagues depending on respective conference affiliations/divisions under NCAA ruleset guidelines determining eligibility requirements any given year(s). Some notable accomplishments include winning four national championships in Men’s Basketball alone between 1999–2014 while Women’s Basketball team won eleven titles during 1995–2016 time frame respectively along numerous Big East accolades amongst many others achieved throughout past decades leading up until present day successes still enjoyed across board across multiple venues ranging from courtside courtrooms gridirons diamond diamonds etc..
