Caribbean by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 72 The Caribbean is an archipelago of islands in the western Atlantic Ocean, located southeast of North America and east of Central America. It is composed of more than 7,000 islands, cays, reefs and islets stretching from Florida to Venezuela. The area has a tropical climate with warm temperatures throughout the year. History The first inhabitants of the region were Amerindians who migrated from South America over 6500 years ago. Later arrivals included Europeans such as Christopher Columbus and Spanish settlers who colonized much of the region during the 16th century. This era saw numerous wars between European powers for control over various parts of this territory which resulted in slavery being introduced on many plantations across these territories by colonialists seeking profit off their labor force. Slaves endured harsh conditions until they were emancipated following independence movements that began in 1804 when Haiti declared its freedom from France followed shortly after by other countries within this region including Jamaica (1838) , Cuba (1902), Dominican Republic (1844). Culture & People Over time there have been different waves migration into this part world bringing people with very distinct cultures together making it one richly diverse society today . In addition to descendants indigenous populations living here now are also those African slaves brought centuries ago along with East Indians , Chinese amongst others creating unique blend culture known Caribbean . Many cities towns feature colorful architecture traditional foods reflecting multi-cultural population residing here . There various languages spoken English French Creole however music dance remain cornerstone cultural identity shared all citizens regardless origin ethnicity .
