It can affect all body organs, including the skin, lungs, breast, prostate and other organs. Cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide. History The earliest record of cancer dates back to ancient Egypt in 1600 BC where it was documented as being an “ulcerous tumor” that caused pain and difficulty breathing for those affected. The term “cancer” itself comes from Greek physician Hippocrates who used the word carcinos meaning crab or crayfish to describe tumors because their swollen veins resembled a crustacean’s legs . Over time different cultures throughout history have developed various methods for treating this disease such as Chinese herbal medicine which dates back over 2000 years ago. Additionally, Ancient Egyptians believed that certain gods caused cancer with their wrathful behavior towards humans thus creating rituals to appease them in order to cure the illness . Causes Cancer occurs when cells within a specific organ become damaged due to genetic mutations or environmental factors like radiation exposure or smoking cigarettes which cause carcinogens (substances known to increase risk) enter into our bodies and damage our DNA strands resulting in uncontrollable cell division . This results in malignant tumors forming which can then metastasize (spread) throughout various parts if not treated quickly enough .
