Cambodia by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 47 Cambodia, officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia and formerly known as Kampuchea, is a country located in Southeast Asia. It is bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east and Gulf of Thailand (or “Thai Sea”) to the southwest. The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh. With a population of over 15 million people, it has an area of 181,035 square kilometres (69 898 sq mi). The official religion for most Cambodians are Theravada Buddhism which was introduced during ancient times when Hinduism had declined in South East Asian region with strong influence from neighbouring countries such as India and China. Other religions practiced include Islam & Christianity although they make up only a small percentage or minority groups within society compared with Buddhism’s estimated 95% prevalence among locals according to 2019 estimates. Politically speaking Cambodia follows unitary parliamentary constitutional monarchy form of government headed by King Norodom Sihamoni who ascended throne on October 14th 2004 after his father abdicated due royal succession laws enacted since 1864 legislative reforms initiated under French Protectorate rule period between 1863-1953 before independence later gained July 1953 following Tokyo Peace Conference negotiations ending Indo-China War(1945-54). Top officials appointed/elected include Prime Minister Hun Sen leading ruling party ‘Cambodian People’s Party’ established 1979 then reestablished 1991 replacing abolished Khmer Rouge regime politically active 1975–1979 while other opposition parties mainly comprise Sam Rainsy Party led current president Dr Sam Rainsy plus Human Rights Party chaired current secretary general Kem Sokha both founded 2007 respectively joined forces 2012 forming National Rescue Movement prior dissolution 2017 followed 2018 arrest warrant issued against latter prompting self exile abroad Malaysia where he currently resides avoiding jail time back home if ever extradited.. Economically speaking GDP per capita amounts US$1 514 ranking 149th globally despite being one poorest countries world wide largely attributed rural poverty agricultural sector still paramount source income accounting 80% labor force engaged farming activities rice production major contributor Gross Domestic Product total output comprising almost half export value generated 2015 figures showing exports valued $7 billion importing goods worth $8 billion same year hence resulting large trade deficit -$ 1billion recorded 2016 stats showin g imports continuing rise reaching staggering heights 16 billion 2018 meanwhile exports declining slightly 6 billion same figure yet again widening gap difference even further –$ 10bn!
