Brittney Griner

Brittney Yevette Griner (born October 18, 1990) is an American professional basketball player who currently plays for the Phoenix Mercury of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). She played college basketball at Baylor University in Waco, Texas. She was the first overall pick in 2013 WNBA Draft and became one of only six players to have scored 2,000 points and blocked 500 shots during their collegiate careers. In her early years she earned national recognition after setting multiple records while leading Nimitz High School to a state championship title as a junior and senior.

Griner has been hailed by many analysts as one of the greatest female shot blockers ever; she holds several NCAA defensive records for blocks including single-season blocks with 223 during 2011–12 season which shattered Lisa Leslie’s long standing record of 209 set 17 years prior. As well as being renowned for her prolific scoring ability—averaging 22 points per game over four seasons—she also led Division I women’s basketball in rebounds during 2012–13 with 11.5 boards per contest along with finishing second all-time on Baylor’s career rebounding list behind Sophia Young. During her collegiate career she received numerous awards including three Big 12 Player Of The Year Awards, two USBWA National Player Of The Year Awards, Two AP Player Of The Year nominations among other accolades highlighted by becoming just the third athlete ever to be named Associated Press Athlete OF The year twice joining fellow contemporaries Tim Duncan & Kevin Durant respectively .
In April 2013 Brittney Griner was drafted number 1 overall into then newly formed eight team league known today as Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA).
