Blantyre is a city in the Southern Region of Malawi. It is located on the Shire River, about 300 kilometres south of Lake Malawi and 37 kilometres east of Limbe. The population as of 2018 was estimated at 687,879 inhabitants making it the largest city in Malawi by population.

The City of Blantyre was founded by David Livingstone after his discoveryof Lake Nyasa (now known as Lake Malawi). He named it “Mlanjeni” or “the burning fire”after witnessing a large numberof fires lit up to celebrate an historic event taking place there. In 1876 he renamed it for Robert Moffat’s birthplace village near Glasgow Scotland; thus Blantyre became its official name with its origin from Scottish Gaelic “blaan-tyre”.

Over time, Blantyre has grown into oneof Africa’s major commercial centersandhas becomeoneofthe most significant citiesin eastern and centralAfricafor both business and tourism activities due toits strategic location between Zambia, Mozambique and Tanzania. As suchit attracts many international visitors who come fortourism attractionssuchasChichiri Shopping Mall(Malawis first modern shopping mall) , Queen Victoria Park (which houses various birds), Mulanje Mountain Forest Reserve (smallest World Heritage Site)and other wildlife reserves nearby like Liwonde NationalPark which hosta variety animal species including elephants, hippos etc..
