Belarus by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 55 Belarus (Belarusian: Беларусь, Biełaruś; Russian: Беларусь, Belarus’), is a landlocked country in Eastern Europe bordered by Russia to the northeast, Ukraine to the south, Poland to the west and Lithuania and Latvia to the northwest. Its capital and largest city is Minsk. Over 40% of its 207,600 square kilometres (80,200 sq mi) are forested. Its major economic sectors are service industries and manufacturing. Until the 20th century it was part of European states like Great Duchy of Lithuania or Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth with strong cultural ties between them as well as significant influence from Russia due to geographical proximity. Since then—after brief period under Soviet rule after Second World War—it has become an independent state within former USSR borders which declared sovereignty on 27 July 1990 but remained member of Commonwealth Independent States until dissolution in December 1991 when it gained full independence from Soviet Union following referendum held earlier that year .
