Beirut by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 54 Beirut (Arabic: بيروت Bayrūt, French: Beyrouth) is the capital and largest city of Lebanon. Located on a peninsula at the midpoint of Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast, Beirut has been inhabited for more than 5,000 years. It was during this time that it became an important trading center in the region between Europe and Asia. Today, Beirut is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the Middle East where its rich culture reflects a unique blend of both Eastern and Western influences. The city enjoys a subtropical-Mediterranean climate with mild winters and warm to hot summers as well as plenty of rainfall throughout the year making it ideal for growing crops like olives, grapes and citrus fruits which are widely exported from here around world markets. Beirut has experienced decades’ worth of civil war since 1975 when fighting began between various factions leading to massive destruction all over town but especially within downtown area known today as “Martyrs’ Square”. Despite these events though many historical landmarks such as mosques have remained intact including some UNESCO World Heritage sites located nearby like Byblos or Baalbek temples – two popular tourist attractions just outside city limits. Currently reconstruction efforts in Beirut have led to resurgence economic activity while also preserving its traditional charm by maintaining certain characteristics like colorful street art depicting vibrant scenes typical only found here giving visitors sense true local flavor no matter how fast paced life gets bustling through narrow alleyways or wide boulevards alike!
