Auto Racing, also known as motor racing or car racing is a sport involving the use of automobiles for competition. It began in 1894 when cars were first used to compete against one another on public roads and tracks. The goal of auto racing is to complete laps faster than competitors while adhering to rules set by governing bodies such as the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile). Races can involve any type of motor vehicle including stock cars, performance vehicles, dragsters, karts and touring cars.

The various forms of auto racing have evolved over time with different types being developed around different countries and regions. Popular forms include Formula One (F1), NASCAR (National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing) in North America; V8 Supercars in Australia; Touring Cars such as BTCC (British Touring Car Championship); Rallycross; Drag Racing; Off-road/Off-shore races like Dakar Rally or Baja 1000 ; Hillclimbs  and Endurance events like 24 Hours Of Le Mans . Automobiles are usually categorised into either production based categories where manufacturers produce vehicles according to certain regulations set out by governing bodies or alternatively bespoke racecar designs which vary depending on their intended purpose within a specific form of motorsport e.g F1 design vs IndyCar design etc.
