Asa Hutchinson (born December 3, 1950) is an American politician who has served as the 46th Governor of Arkansas since 2015. He previously was a U.S. Congressman representing Arkansas’ Third Congressional District from 1997 to 2001 and again from 2011 to 2015, as well as Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration from 2001 to 2003 under President George W. Bush.

Early life and education

Hutchinson was born in Bentonville, Arkansas on December 3rd, 1950 into a political family: his father Tim Hutchinson served in both houses of the state legislature while his grandfather Asa Leflar held several posts including mayor of Bentonville and Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Of Arkansas; he also had two uncles that were lawyers with one being Lt Gov Nathalie Franklin Hutchison whose term ended when she passed away at age 91 in 2018 .He attended Bob Jones University for undergraduate studies then went on to earn law degrees from The University Of Arkansas School Of Law In Fayetteville And Harvard Law School In Cambridge Massachusetts respectively before entering private practice focusing primarily on criminal defense cases .

Political career

After working briefly with former president Richard Nixon’s legal team following Watergate ,he entered politics full time first serving as Republican National Committeeman From 1989 To 1996 followed by election victories sending him t0 Washington DC representing third congressional district beginning Jan 1st 1997 until jan 2nd 2005 completing four terms during which he chaired various subcommittees such House Judiciary Subcommittee On Crime Terrorism And Homeland Security plus Commerce Consumer Protection And Competitiveness SubCommittee among many others prior joining George W Bush administration where he led DEA till resigning march 2004 due growing criticism over handling issues related use performance enhancing drugs professional athletes Following stint federal government returned home winning 2010 primary elections against incumbent John Boozman after lengthy campaign considering governor run however ultimately declined citing desire spend more quality time family thus continuing serve constituents via house representatives instead leaving seat open 2014 gubernatorial race win nomination republican party november same year running successful bid defeating democrat Mike Ross eventually sworn office january 11th 2015 becoming 45th person hold title governor arkansas currently serves second consecutive term set expire January 2023 likely seek reelection 2022 barring unforeseen circumstances
