Arizona Wildcats by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 59 The Arizona Wildcats are the athletic teams that represent the University of Arizona, located in Tucson. The school is a member of NCAA Division I and competes in the Pac-12 Conference. The school sponsors 19 varsity sports programs including baseball, basketball, cross country/track & field, football, golf, soccer and softball for men; as well as basketball, cross country/track & field ,golf , gymnastics , soccer , softball and volleyball for women. Arizona has won national championships in men’s basketball (1997), softball (1991 and 1993) and indoor track & field (2012). In addition to their multiple team titles they have had 28 individual athletes win National Championships across all sports since 1982 when it became an official sport at the university. In recent years several high profile coaches have come through the program including Lute Olson who coached from 1983 to 2007 guiding them to 4 Final Four Appearances during his tenure with one championship victory over Kentucky. Sean Miller took over head coaching duties after Olson’s retirement winning 2 PAC 12 regular season titles along with 3 Elite 8 appearances but no national title game appearance yet . Other notable coaches include current Football Head Coach Kevin Sumlin who came on board prior to 2018 season bringing some much needed enthusiasm back into Wildcat Nation while also leading them back to bowl games which they haven’t seen since 2016 when Rich Rodriguez was still around . Throughout its history Arizona athletics has been supported by fans known affectionately as “Wildcat Nation” or simply “Cat Fans”. They are particularly renowned for their strong support during home matches where opposing teams often find themselves outmatched both vocally and numerically by those cheering on UA students players alike at McKale Center or other venues throughout Tucson area . Whether these passionate individuals turn up sporting traditional red blue colors show off face paint design tattoos you can always count on them creating electric atmosphere full energy whenever Cats take court diamond gridiron .
