Arctic Ocean

The Arctic Ocean is the smallest and shallowest of the world’s five major oceans. It covers an area of approximately 14,056,000 km2 (5,440,000 sq mi) and is located in the Northern Hemisphere between Europe and North America to the east, Asia to the north-east; Greenland to its west; and southward by a line drawn through Bering Strait from Alaska towards Siberia. The ocean has two main basins: an Amerasian Basin in front of Eurasia extending across much of northern Atlantic/Arctic region with depths up to 5500 m (18043 ft); and a smaller but deeper Eurasian basin limited at its eastern end by Lomonosov Ridge which reaches down as far as 4000m (13123 ft).

The Arctic Ocean experiences long periods during winter when large parts are covered with ice including drifting pack ice that can reach 3 meters thick or more. This helps regulate temperatures within it due to reduced sunlight penetration since most solar radiation gets reflected off this frozen surface back out into space rather than being absorbed by water molecules below it like other open waters would experience typically. With global warming however sea levels have been rising which threatens coastal communities around it with increased flooding risks if not taken seriously soon enough. Also melting permafrost underneath ground could lead too further erosion on shorelines over time yet this will likely take many years before noticeable changes start occurring in any significant manner though still worth monitoring for now so appropriate decisions can be made sooner rather then later if needed based upon these observations collected regularly throughout year cycles accordingly.
