It is located on the Cook Inlet of south-central Alaska and has a population of over 300,000 people as of 2017. The area around Anchorage was first settled by Dena’ina Athabascan Native Alaskans thousands of years ago who lived off natural resources like fishing and hunting. The modern history of Anchorage began with its being founded as an official town site for railroad construction workers during World War I in 1914 and officially incorporated two years later in 1916 after it became established as a permanent settlement. Today, Anchorage serves as both Alaska’s main port city and one of the country’s primary transportation centers due to its location near major air routes from North America to Asia Pacific countries via Ted Stevens International Airport (ANC). Furthermore, ANC boasts some excellent local amenities such as many museums including the popular Imaginarium Science Discovery Center; nearby parks offering outdoor activities like skiing; lively nightlife spots featuring live music venues; various theater offerings through Perseverance Theater company; plus numerous restaurants reflecting all kinds international cuisines that are sure to please any palate! Anchorages economy has traditionally been dominated by industries related to fishing , oil & gas production , military operations , tourism , government services . However more recently greater emphasis has been placed on diversifying their economic base towards tech startups & digital media companies .
