Alabama Crimson Tide by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 64 The Alabama Crimson Tide is the nickname used to refer to the athletic teams of The University of Alabama, located in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. The school’s athletics program includes 18 varsity teams competing in NCAA Division I-FBS football and Southeastern Conference (SEC) competition. History Early history (1892–1921) In 1892, Bully Hamilton became coach for what was then called “Athletic Department” at the University of Alabama. He changed its name from Athletic Department to “Crimson White” after their colors at that time. This lasted until 1907 when a student body vote determined that it be changed again; this time they settled on “Crimson Tide” which has been used ever since as the moniker for their sports teams. It wasn’t until 1921 when Wallace Wade came aboard as head coach did success start coming in waves with five conference championships between 1925 and 1930 along with an undefeated season in 1926 capped off by a Rose Bowl win over Washington 20-19 earning them national recognition for being one of top programs around country.
