Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball

by Joshua Brown

The Alabama Crimson Tide men’s basketball team is the intercollegiate men’s basketball program representing the University of Alabama. The school competes in the Southeastern Conference (SEC) in Division I of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The team is currently led by head coach Nate Oats, who was hired on April 5th, 2019 after Avery Johnson left for a job with ESPN.

Alabama has won over 1,000 games and appeared in 18 NCAA Tournaments as well as 15 NIT tournaments since they began playing during the 1923–24 season. In that time period they have won 4 SEC regular season titles and 10 SEC tournament championships including back to back titles in 1934 & 1935 and again from 1954-1956. They also made their first Final Four appearance during 2004-05 under former head coach Mark Gottfried where they lost to eventual champion North Carolina Tar Heels 75-70 in overtime. Since then they have failed to make another trip while making 9 more NCAA Tournament appearances but failing each time before or after reaching at least Sweet 16 level competition three times between 2006-2012 .

In recent years Alabama had found success behind former coaches Anthony Grant from 2009 until 2015 when he resigned following a second round loss against Notre Dame Fighting Irish followed by Avery Johnson taking over for an additional 3 seasons until his departure prior to this past offsason which saw them hire current head Coach Nate Oats on April 5th, 2019 . During these last two tenures there were notable players such as Collin Sexton , Trevor Releford , Levi Randolph , Shaquille Harrison along with many others whom all helped lead them into post season play multiple times even though neither tenure resulted any deep runs within those same tournaments mentioned earlier despite being picked several times among top seeds entering such events..

As stated previously under both tenures recently there have been significant talent coming through Saban’s system however only one player has ever received national recognition going beyond All American status John Petty Jr was named Naismith College Player of Year finalist during 2020 alongside fellow finalists Obi Toppin and Luka Garza Ultimately it would be Garza winning out yet still showing promise towards future stars capable of helping bring success similar if not greater than what Petty did just months ago
