Abuja by Joshua Brown May 1, 2023 66 Abuja is the capital city of Nigeria and was specially created in 1976 to replace Lagos as the nation’s political center. It is located on a plateau in central Nigeria within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and has an estimated population of 1,876,000 people according to 2018 estimates. The master plan for Abuja was developed by American architect Constantinos A. Doxiadis who saw it as an opportunity to create a city that would embody modernity while being rooted in Nigerian culture. The construction began shortly after its development with various ministries setting up their headquarters there by 1979 when it officially became the country’s new administrative centre replacing Lagos as such. Abuja hosts key government institutions including most notably; Presidential Complex – which houses office buildings, residential units and staff quarters among others; National Assembly Complex – home to both chambers of parliament ; Supreme Court complex- hosting premises for legal proceedings; Federal Secretariat containing offices for different federal departments amongst other important establishments . In addition ,it also contains several parks like Millennium Park and recreational facilities such as Zuma Rock amusement park making it one of Africa’s fastest growing cities . Apart from these official landmarks ,the Gudu district serves a great deal of commercial activities where locals can find shopping malls ,restaurants & bars etc.. Additionally, major international hotels have been built around this area catering mainly towards business travelers & tourists alike . Other places worth noting include Jabi Lake Mall situated near Jabi lake offering numerous shopping outlets along with leisure attractions while International Conference Centre (ICC),an impressive building made entirely out marble set closeby provides venue not only conventions but concerts too! All these features make Abuja prominently unique compared other African capitals embodying all characteristics required thriving metropolis without compromising traditional values held dear Nigerians nationwide!
