Algeria Wildfires

Raging wildfires have claimed the lives of 25 individuals in Algeria, among them 10 military personnel who were on the front lines attempting to contain the conflagration, as stated by governmental departments on Monday.

The inferno resulted in the evacuation of at least 1,500 individuals, according to the information released by the Interior Ministry, though further details remain undisclosed.

The casualty reports released by the Interior Ministry disclosed a count of 15 fatalities and 24 wounded individuals. Following this, the Defense Ministry shared an additional count of 10 military fatalities and 25 wounded soldiers, who were engaged in firefighting efforts in the tourist region of Beni Ksila, situated east of Algiers, the capital city.

The timeline concerning when these casualties occurred was unclear, however, it is known that the fires have been ablaze for a number of days.

Swiftly spread by robust winds, wildfires have engulfed forests and agricultural territories in 16 regions, sparking a total of 97 infernos in the North African nation. The most extensive and lethal blazes have devastated areas of Bejaia and Jijel — situated in the Kabyle region to the east of Algiers — as well as Bouira, located approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Algiers, as detailed by the Interior Ministry.

Approximately 7,500 firefighters, supported by 350 trucks and aerial assistance, have been deployed to mitigate the fires.

Algeria is no stranger to the menace of summer wildfires. Last August, wildfires that flared near Algeria’s northern border with Tunisia resulted in at least 37 fatalities. The preceding year, authorities reported a number of deaths due to wildfires, including military personnel dispatched to aid in combating the fires in the mountainous Kabyle region, dotted with villages.

Persistent heatwaves and robust winds have intensified wildfires in Greece and other Mediterranean regions this summer.
