Veteran Spanish Actress Confirms Surrogate Baby is Granddaughter

Recently, a 68-year-old famous person in Spain made headlines because it was reported that she used a surrogate mother in Miami to have a baby. But on Wednesday, she revealed through ¡Hola!, which is a famous magazine for wealthy people, that the baby is actually her son’s daughter who died of cancer last year.

Ana Obregón told ¡Hola! magazine that before her son, Aless Lequio García, began treatment for his illness, doctors encouraged him to save some of his sperm in New York. Before he passed away, Aless wanted a child of his own. Although surrogate pregnancies are not possible in Spain, children from such pregnancies can be registered even if they come from other countries.

Obregón told a magazine that the girl is not his daughter, but rather his granddaughter. He also mentioned that it was Aless’ wish to have a child.

The news about the baby caught the attention of Spanish media and politicians, and this made the government from left-wing coalition angry. Politicians and various outlets associated with the media refer to surrogacy as “renting a womb”.

The Minister of Equality, Irene Montero, thinks that surrogate pregnancies are wrong and the laws should be changed to prevent people in Spain from using surrogates. However, Defense Minister Margarita Robles disagreed and said we should respect someone’s personal choices.

The main opposing political party, the Popular Party, has said they would discuss allowing such pregnancies if there’s no money being exchanged. At first this matter that involves a 68-year-old Obregón created a lot of debates around the idea of surrogacy. ¡Hola! magazine reported that this baby was born on March 20th and was conceived in June which is when Obregón’s son turned 30 years old.

Obregón is a famous biologist in Spain who has been on lots of TV shows like “The A-Team”. She’s well known because every summer she has a photoshoot for a magazine wearing a different bikini.
