US Says 20,000 Russians Killed in Ukrainian War Since December

The White House recently told us that since December, Russia has had a lot of casualties. They believe 100,000 people have been hurt and more than 20,000 have died because Ukraine is defending itself against Russia’s attack in the east part of their country. A lot of fierce fighting is going on around the city of Bakhmut right now and it looks like Russia is trying to trap the city.

John Kirby, a spokesman from the White House National Security Council, said that according to recently declassified U.S. intelligence, Russia may have had more than 200,000 people killed or wounded in the war so far. This number is much higher than what General Mark Milley stated in November – which was over 100,000 people.

Russian soldiers from the Wagner group and other forces are fighting Ukrainian troops by going into houses in order to get control of the last road heading west which is still occupied by Ukraine’s army. This road is super important because it’s necessary for supplies and new recruits. Both sides have said that they’ve achieved some success in recent days.

Kirby said that since December, almost half of the people killed have been from a group called Wagner forces. A lot of them were ex-convicts who were released specially to fight for Russia. Kirby also stated that these Wagner forces weren’t given enough fighting or training skills, leadership, or directions on how to do their jobs properly.

The White House points out the cost to Russia (soldiers and weapons) to gain control of Bakhmut, which it believes does not have much importance for the war. But, some people say that capturing Bakhmut could help Russia to move closer towards bigger cities in Donetsk like Kramatorsk and Sloviansk.

Kirby said that the number of Russian people who died in Bakhmut was similar to the number of deaths we saw during some of the biggest conflicts of World War II. These include ‘The Battle of the Bulge’, a bad fight for Germany on Europe’s Western side, and ‘The Guadalcanal campaign’ which was when the Allies first fought Japan.

Kirby said that U.S. soldiers lost three times as many lives during the Guadalcanal campaign in WWII than in five months. Col. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, the head of Ukrainian ground forces, mentioned that Russia was trying really hard to take control of Bakhmut but hadn’t succeeded yet. He then added that some of their troops managed to fight back and push their attackers away from certain locations in the city.

Kirby did not say how many soldiers from Ukraine got hurt or died in the battles. Milley said in November that almost 100,000 Ukrainian people were likely injured too. Lolita C. Baldor wrote something related to this news too.
