An Air National Guardsman from Massachusetts was in court on Friday after being accused of letting out highly important military documents without permission. Prosecutors showed evidence and asked questions to people who knew the guardsman which helped them figure out it was him.

The FBI used information from a platform called Discord to find Jack Teixeira, who is a soldier. He was using his government computer to look for the word “leak” on the day that news reports said that secret documents had been shared with people who shouldn’t have them. Jack Teixeira is now arrested because of this document leak probe and there have been talks about God, guns, and war secrets.

President Joe Biden said the government is trying to figure out if the leaked documents are true or not. In the meantime, he said that the military and intelligence community must take action to limit who can see this sensitive information and our international partners will help too.

Friday’s news gave us some insight into how the investigation found its way to Teixeira, 21. Even though we still don’t know why they leaked the information, the Justice Department has not stopped their investigation and the Pentagon is also looking into it to make sure that something like this does not happen again in the future.

Teixeira went to a court in Boston. The judge accused him of keeping and sending secret information without permission, which is against the law. He didn’t say whether he was guilty or not, but the judge made him stay in jail till they have another hearing next week.

Just yesterday, Teixeira was arrested by many police officers that were carrying guns. This arrest happened because he had revealed some secret information about the war in Ukraine, other nations’ capabilities and interests, and national security issues to everyone.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said on Friday that it’s not just about stealing documents – although that is illegal – it’s also about keeping and sending them to other people. It’s clear that in the end, the documents were indeed sent out.

Investigators think Teixeira was in charge of a group chat on Discord, a social media platform with lots of people who play online games. This is where Teixeira talked about things like guns, video games and funny stuff for years.

The FBI had been investigating a case and wrote an 8-page report about it. They had spoken to someone who knew what the suspected person– Teixeira– had been posting. The posts were related to wars and politics, and they had started appearing in December.

The FBI got some info from a person about ‘Jack’ who was part of the Air National Guard and was living in Massachusetts. Then, the FBI got access to his billing records from Discord which helped them locate him.

The FBI was told by a person that Teixeira decided to photograph documents instead of typing them out at work because he was scared of being caught. This is different from what others have said, which is that the user they call “the O.G.” started posting images of documents because other users weren’t taking him seriously enough.

Thug Shaker Central was an online group with around two dozen members who discussed guns, shared memes and joked around. They even had conversations about wars and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

On April 6, the FBI found evidence that a person named Teixeira was searching for the word “leak” on a secret system. The FBI suspects he may have been looking for information about who caused the leaks.

The authorities don’t know why it happened. People talking in the online chat room where the documents were posted said that Teixeira just wanted to show off, not because of any particular belief or cause.

On Friday, he showed up at the court in his jail uniform and sat with his lawyer. At the end, someone from his family said that they loved him and he responded “I love you too”. His lawyer didn’t reply to any questions about it.

The Biden government is trying to keep things under control after the news of the problems broke out. They are reassuring their friends and figuring out the extent of harm done.

There are documents which the government has kept secret. These documents, no one outside of the government has seen, include charts and graphs about Ukrainian soldiers’ locations, how much help other countries give to Ukraine, plus ideas about why and when Russia’s president Vladimir Putin could use nuclear weapons.

There are strict rules that tell us how to handle and protect documents that are secret. They have to be kept in a safe place, and if they had been taken by Teixeira to his house it would have gone against those guidelines.

We don’t know yet how Teixeira, the IT expert, got these special files or what safety measures were put into place for them. The FBI said since 2021 he has had access to very highly confidential programs with a top secret security clearance.

After the arrest, Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin announced that he’ll take a look at all the systems in place to prevent another document leak from happening.

The Justice Department’s head, Garland, stated that anyone granted access to classified documents has already agreed to keep those documents secret and safe – because it’s super important for national security.

The speaker said that it’s very important for our country to send a message. Two writers, Tucker and Merchant, reported the story from Washington and two other writers, Lindsay Whitehurst and Tara Copp also helped with this report.
