IranIran governmentMiddle EastPoliticsUnited States US Congress Unites in Condemning Poisoning of Iranian Girls by Michael Nguyen April 20, 2023 written by Michael Nguyen April 20, 2023 0 comments Bookmark 60 A group of people in the government have created a new club called the Iranian Women Congressional Caucus that is protesting against the bad behaviors of Iran’s government. This comes after they poisoned some girls at school recently. The club has both Republicans and Democrats in it, who all live in the United States. Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee was one of its founders. Recently, the U.S. government spoke out against how Iran treats women because of what happened to Mahsa Amini, who was 22-years-old. She was arrested by the morality police for not wearing an appropriate headscarf and died in their custody on September 16th. There have been protests in Iran for several months now, which are one of the biggest challenges to their government since 1979. It’s estimated that more than 500 people have died and over 19,700 people have been arrested due to the violent enforcement from the government. In response to this, lawmakers of the US House of Representatives voted on a resolution which was in support of these protesters. Last year, hundreds of children in schools for girls have been made sick by something harmful. This has caused people to be concerned about the safety of women and girls and some people have even started protests. The person in charge of all things in Iran, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said that if somebody hurt others on purpose, they should be punished with the death penalty. He called this an “unforgivable crime”. Iranian officials recently admitted that there have been some attacks, but did not provide any information about who is responsible for these attacks or what kind of chemicals were used. There are no religious extremists in Iran like in neighbouring Afghanistan that target women’s education. Many people from the U.S and other Western democracies have called on ending any talks with Iran regarding nuclear negotiations. Last month, the U.S. punished Iran for how it handles a certain situation. The punishment was different types of sanctions directed at people and firms that were accused of hurting women’s rights by responding to protests about how young women and girls are treated. Included in the sanctions were two people who work in Iranian prisons, some businesses making equipment for law enforcement, the head of the Iranian military, and more people or organizations. A group of politicians from both the Democratic and Republican parties came together Thursday and said they are going to make new laws and resolutions to try to help protect women’s rights in Iran.
